Diablo 3

Unread post by ittybitty » Tue Nov 17, 2009 8:56 am

rry, no Diablo III next year.

Zoom

Last week in New York, Blizzard offered a product release roadmap (thanks Kotaku) for the next few years, showing what is to come in 2009, 2010, and a few years beyond. For this year, the company listed World of Warcraft only, however Blizzard obviously plans to provide content beyond 2011 with the release of Cataclysm in 2010 and other content beyond.

As for 2010, Blizzard also lists a few titles other than the World of Warcraft expansion. Included is the highly anticipated sci-fi RTS StarCraft II and the upgraded Battle.net. Also on Blizzard's list is "China Online," an entry we assume represents the updated version of World of Warcraft, specialized for the Chinese requirements.

But what isn't on the 2010 list is Diablo III. Gamers wanting the fantasy-themed action RPG may not see the game until 2011 or 2012 according to the presentation. This period of time will also host a few other titles however, including Blizzard's mystery "unannounced MMO" and the Star Craft II expansion. Battle.net also appears in the "next few years" category; we presume Blizzard will be making modifications and adding new features to the revamped service over the next three or so years.

It's unfortunate that Diablo III isn't making an appearance in 2010. As it stands, the game has been in development for four years, and may remain in development for a possible five. With that said, it may hit store shelves before Q4 2011, giving it a good six years to fester. Anything beyond that will make it qualified as a possible contender against Duke Nukem Forever.

Beta to start 'soon'

Details are being leaked, and images added to the battle.net websites indicating D3 beta will start within 2 months. And should be available holiday 2011.

1. Activision Earning Call - During the latest conference call, Activision announced that the beta would start during Q3 2011, that's between July 1st and September 30th.

2. Press Tour - A Diablo 3 press tour is scheduled for Diablo fansites on August 1st, this is pretty much what happened with Cataclysm with the Press Tour happening 2 weeks before the start of beta.

3. Box Art - Last but not least, the Diablo 3 beta box art has been uploaded on the european battle.net last week, Blizzard seems to be getting ready for a launch "soon"

Remember when you first heard stuff like how either Steam or StarCraft 2 require you to be online for authentication purposes? That the process to play or utilize either service offline can be a bit circuitous, but at least it's still possible to be offline. But, Diablo 3 differs in that you must be online to play at all -- not just for authentication.

In detailing the list of improvements and changes that Diablo 3 brings to Battle.net (persistent friends list, cross-game chat, PVP matchmaking, etc.), the ability to auction off items for real-world money stands out the most. Essentially, Blizzard has taken the seedy world of third-party gold and items or characters for money trading, and institutionalized the practice.

Confirmed, not rumors.

Always on DRM, and microtransactions? This is turning me off of this game.

I have previously purchased both Diablo and Diablo 2. I would easily purchase Diablo 3 if they didn't do everything that they're doing right now.

Key point:

•The currency-based auction house is completely optional. Player-to-player trading still exists, and there will be an auction house that uses in-game gold as well. Also note that the auction house is the only method of using real-world currency (i.e. no using cash for player-to-player trades).

Online only doesn't bother me at all, for the pros of, reducing the possibility of duping, item creation, or any number of the hacks that were released for both Diablo 1 and 2.

Server side is a good way to go.

I agree that in theory, the reasons that Activision Blizzard is feeding us, is solid.

Online only is fine, I have broadband, whatever. But what if I go on vacation and don't have internet? Or if I want to play in the car? Or what happens when battle.net is down, which happens frequently? That's where the downside lies.
Gameplay wise in Diablo, not a big difference. If you wanted to play online, you couldn't use your offline characters anyway. They're just hurting the single player campaign.

But, who is going to use the in-game currency one? Noone. IMO, this economy is going to tank. It will be all real world $, and the in game currency will be completely worthless, except to vendors. But, I could be wrong, we will have to see.

I just won't buy stuff for real money and will find it all! The online all the time is lame, but if i'm going to buy it, it won't matter.

I have it pre-ordered through Amazon, and won't cancel it.

I can complain, and I agree with people's arguments in principle (slippery slope, micro transactions, pay for DLC, etc, blah)
But really, I don't care, and I will buy it and play it.

Any loot in party mode, is individual loot. The loot that you see on your screen, is all for you. Noone else sees your loot. So if we kill a skeleton, he may drop a helmet for me, an axe for Nephron, maybe a potion for Maxim. Etc. I can't see the axe or potion, and they can't see what it dropped for me. So, no more fighting over loot. Just trading or selling.
Neat concept!

And you can be power leveled. If you're in a party, you get XP for every kill within X range, even if you didn't do any damage to it.

Commentary over at slashdot:
http://games.slashdot.org/story/11/08/1 ... equirement
It's really about the greed. the DRM is really *NOT* for piracy. honestly i dont think blizzard gives a flip about piracy, a major component of the game is online multiplayer. games like that have been hard to pirate back in the D2 days if your key wasn't legit bnet would kick you out. sure you could use a keygen for single player but online wouldn't accept the key.

this really stems from the micro trans shop. blizzard knows a lot of people like to start with single player to get a feel for a game before jumping in. they want you to be able to transition your SP character to a MP character and buy crap from their store to support that character.

personally i knew it was going to be like this last year when i didn't buy starcraft 2 because of their DRM bullshit. now i won't be buying D3. the saddest part is how completely unnecessary it is. they could easily secure a healthy online economy with old school cd keys and leave the single player alone and even offer lan or open bnet.

and offline SP isn't just about gaming in the middle of nowhere, i like to cheat in SP sometimes. i downloaded hacked lvl99 D2 characters just for shits in giggles an had a few hours fun obliterating the game and testing various builds to see which one i wanted to shoot for online.
