Punkbuster's requirea admin, scans your whole file system and RAM, but nobody is getting their panties in a bunch about it.

HackShield was also widely used in Aion, the MMO, as well.
Was Punkbuster created by Korean developed / Chinese publishers?

Nope, but that doesn't matter. Murica companies spy on you more than foreign game companies. You're saying you trust Skype more than HackShield?

It doesn't matter than a Chinese company could be using it to do who knows what? If it is running a service I would assume it runs all the time. Do you actually know what it is doing?

I don't trust Skype, and very rarely use it, besides that it doesn't run 24/7 a service with administrator rights.

HackShield isn't Chinese, it's South Korean. Country of origin doesn't matter much anymore. American companies can spy, and Chinese companies can be reputable.

And there's numerous documented cases of Skype running, enabling microphone and webcam, even when the process is supposedly killed.

I'm from South Korea and I've got some applications I want to run on your computer as services, so since I am reputable don't worry about what they do, or that they run on your computer 24/7.

Sorry, that just doesn't make much sense, you would think they would be able to come up with a better way to deal with anti-cheat than to run as a service on your machine. I'm no programmer, but i'm sure there has got to be a better way to do it.

I completely agree. It's a stupid way of doing it, it is a rootkit, and does require admin. That is a poor way of doing it and most (all) games don't need admin.

But just because a software company is from South Korea doesn't make them untrustworthy. Ever installed MSI Afterburner? MSI, Korean. Asus, Korean. ASRock, Korea. You had to install drivers for your motherboard. And those are system drivers, and you trust them. Do you KNOW what info they're sending out?

Pretty much everything comes from Taiwan so we should just throw it all away. Because we can only trust Americans.

Some good points. I'm not viewing privacy issues as a primary concern, but it could be a secondary concern.

Primarily I'm concerned with limiting my exposure to third parties having unfettered root access to my system. While HackShield and co. may not care to try to do anything malicious, I have a hard time believing that their code is so bullet proof that I can trust it with keys to the kingdom.

A good reference is the Sony class action lawsuit in the early 2000s where their music CDs installed a similar software on PCs to allow you to listen to the music without being able to rip it, and without making it clear to the user what they were installing. This virtual device driver/rootkit eventually had published security vulnerabilities against it and malware was able to tap into it to escalate up to root level access on all PCs that used these music CDs.

So I'm not really concerned about what HackShield is doing, I'm concerned about the level of confidence I can have that it can be trusted to protect the highest level of exposure to my system.

I accept that VAC can run the same risk, but chose to open my exposure by trusting Valve to do their due diligence to ensure VAC is secure. PunkBuster I trust less, but adopted a better security model than HackShield, and is more or less history at this point.

Anyway.

I'll be playing this game for a long time and I'm really enjoying it. It brings back the magical feeling from MMOs of old, and I've joined a good guild. What I'm trying to say is.
