2 Million copies sold

For reference -
World of Warcraft – 12,000,000
Aion - 3,400,000
Runescape – 1,300,000
Lineage – 750,000
Lineage II – 750,000
Dofus – 520,000
Final Fantasy XI – 350,000
Eve Online – 325,000
Lord of the Rings Online – 210,000
City of Heroes/Villains - 125,000
Age of Conan – 120,000
Ultima Online - 100,000
Everquest - 100,000
Warhammer Online – 80,000
Darkfall - 25,000

So, this is one of the most successful MMOs to date. Also note, most of Aion's remaining subscriptions are based in Asia.

It is currently #5 on xfire's most played list http://beta.xfire.com/games" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
It is rated 8.6 out of 10 by the players on Gamespot http://www.gamespot.com/star-wars-the-o ... atform/pc/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

This is a very casual friendly game. On our first try, we cleared the nightmare (hardest of 3 settings) mode of the 8 man operation. The game is fun, there is plenty to do between the dailies, pvp, and group flashpoints.
However, this is possibly the least optimized game engine I have ever seen. You can go from 100 FPS in an area where it's just you and monsters to 20 or less FPS in PvP or when lots of other players are around. And the textures have lots of room to improve. Crafting is mostly useless at max level, and the end-game gear doesn't look epic at all.

That being said, the upcoming 1.2 patch will fix most if not all of these issues. You can unlock new races and abilities for your alts, there are new lightsaber/blaster colors as well as a complete reboot of crafting to make it viable for end-game and a customizable UI. They are also optimizing the game engine, and upgrading the textures.
Throw out everything you've heard of this game before the 1.2 patch. If you're still debating this game, wait until 1.2 hits to read the reviews.

Unrelated to patch 1.2 the “Friends Trial” program will start tomorrow, March the 6th. Current subscribers will be able to invite up to three new players for a free seven days trial (up to level 15) of the game.
So, if you're interested in the game at all, let me know and I can shoot you a trial.

Tempting! For me, they just need to release their fabled Mac OS port and I'd be sold.

Free to Play soon

That was fast, IMO.
But, it will be good for the game. Other games such as LOTRO have gone to the same model and it brings in more money, more players, and faster content patches. I really see no downside to this.

Except for the people who already paid for it? Or was it just a subscription based service that didn't require a $59 purchase?

The $59 is now wasted. Anyone can get the game for just the monthly $15 sub, no box required. Previous owners/subscribers get extra of the in-game currency to spend on items.
